On the Frontier of Computers with the Real World

      This is a more general open discussion starting from a presentation of author's contributions to the development and application of floating-point analog-to-digital converters (FP-ADC’s) in various fields. Computers nowadays are embedded in almost every electronic equipment that is connected to the analog world, while algorithms are performed in digital form. FP-ADCs were conceived and used to quantize wide dynamic range signals in applications where large signals need not be encoded with a relative precision greater than that required for small ones. Comparing floating-point with uniform quantization, it was shown that FP-ADC provides smaller relative quantization error and higher dynamic range for the same resolution. FP-ADC’s proved to improve accuracy in testing high-power electric generators and blood pressure monitors.

Short Bio of Dr. Voicu Groza

    Dr. Voicu Groza received the Dipl. Ing. degree in computer engineering and Dr. Ing. degree in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Timisoara, Timisoara, Romania, in 1972 and 1985, respectively. He was a professor and dean of the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers at the Polytechnic University of Timisoara, and in 1996 he joined the University of Ottawa, Canada, where he is a full professor and past associate director, Computer Engineering at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has published more than 400 technical papers in journals, conference proceedings, and books, and received five patents. He was a principal investigator or co-investigator in more than 50 research grants and contracts and has supervised more than one hundred graduate students. His current research interests include biomedical instrumentation and measurements, and high-speed data acquisition systems. Dr. Groza has been volunteering in the frame of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS) both at the Ottawa chapter and at the worldwide society administration level. He has held leadership roles on the organization and technical program committees of numerous international conferences, such as IEEE International Symposium on Medical Measurement and Applications (MeMeA 2008-2025). Dr. Groza has been chair of the Working Group P1721 on Standard for Objective Measurement of Systemic Arterial Blood Pressure in Humans of the IEEE Standards Association and currently he serves as chair of the Subcommittee on Blood Pressure Measurement of TC-25 Medical and Biological Measurements of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society. He served as a member of the Administrative Committee (AdCom) of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society; he is a representative of the IMS in the AdCom of the IEEE Biometrics Council.

Dr. Groza is a Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada.
