Our Colleague, Sorin BABII, Passed Away

With deep sorrow we say good-bye to our colleague, Sorin BABII, which passed away on January 8th, 2024, after a long fight, and we send our sincere condolences to his family.

Sorin BABII was born on December 15th, 1962, in Chișineu-Criș, Arad county. He graduated the real study profile of the "Mihai Eminescu" Highschool in Satu Mare and then joined the Electrical Engineering Faculty of the "Traian Vuia" Politechnic Institute Timisoara, graduating its Automation and Computers program, Software specialty, in 1987.

He worked as a software engineer at ICM Bocsa during 1987-1988 and within structures of the National Defense Ministry between 1988 and 1992. During 1994-1998 he was a Project Manager at Berg Computers Timisoara. He also was an expert-consultant in IT and telecommunications for the Alcatel-Lucent company between 2002-2014.

In 1992 he joins the Computer Department of UPT as a Teaching Assistant, where he teaches the lab workshops of a series of courses which are part of the Computing study programs at the Faculty of Automation and Computing. During 1992-2007, he completes the doctoral research and PhD. Thesis, after which he becomes a Lecturer at the same department. In this position, he develops and teaches several courses, including "Elemente de Grafică și Interfețe Om-Calculator (Computer Graphics and Human-Computer Interfaces)", "Graphics Processing Systems" and "Introduction to Computer Graphics".

His qualities as a teacher, researcher and good colleague will remain forever in our memory and in the memory of the thousands of students he initiated into the fascinating field of Computer Science and Engineering.

The funerals will take place on Wednesday, January 10th, 2024, at 12:00, at the Rusu Șirianu Cemetery, Timișoara.
